School Knott and Grandsire.

Start. Ings.

Route. Ings - Whasdike - Schoolknott Plantation - School Knott - School Knott Tarn - Grandsire - Hagg End - Outrun Nook - Borwick Fold - Ings.

Notes. We were heading for a short walk out of Ambleside when the boss suddenly decided ten minutes in the car was long enough, on leaving Ings she announced "we'll go for a walk on those hills over there", nodding in the general direction of Grandsire, without further ado I turned the car around to drive back to Ings.

We left Ings heading south passing under the Oxenholme/Windermere railway line before reaching a footpath on our right, our route followed field paths with exceptional views to the north, stretched across the skyline Ill Bell, Froswick, Thornthwaite Crag and Red Screes to name but a few. After passing Whasdike we entered Schoolknott Plantation, then onto the slopes of the hill itself, a short ascent and we were on the summit enjoying wonderful views over Windermere Lake, the Langdale Pikes and the Coniston massif. We descended to School Knott Tarn followed by a short ascent to the summit of Grandsire to be welcomed by more stunning views, we decided to re-trace our steps to join the main path, if I'd have brought a map I would of seen an easy descent following the wall south from the summit.

Hagg End Farm followed before a short walk over tarmac to Outrun Nook, here we joined a way-marked path to Borwick Fold, from Borwick Fold the path lead north along the edge of a small cops before entering the wood at a wall corner, a few yards further on we stepped onto tarmac, this was the lane we left Ings on earlier, it was down hill all the way back from here.

Crossing the fields above Ings, looking to High Fairbank with an unnamed fell rising into a blue sky..

Reston Scar seen from the approach to Whasdike.

Sue took this shot, on the far horizon under snow Harter Fell and Kentmere Pike, I think the intended subject was the tree growing around the rock on the left.

Seen from the dappled shade in the pastures below Whasdike, Brunt Knott over Hugill.

A wonderful view to the Langdale skyline, seen from Whasdike.

A lot closer, it's by far easier to make out the Langdale Pikes, Bow Fell and the Crinkle Crags.

The high skyline to the north, Harter Fell with Kentmere Pike in sunlight and shade.

The now familiar Langdale Pikes with Bow Fell and the Crinkle Crags under snow to the left.

Seen from the lower slopes of School Knott a striking Red Screes.

On School Knott looking to the Howgill Fells with Grandsire rising to the right.

The Langdale Pikes look quite imposing seen over Windermere Lake.

A wonderful view through a stunning Lakeland landscape.

Delightful School Knott Tarn.
